ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE. Gerard F. (1r batx A)

ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE

First of all I would like to say that I’ve done this challenge and trust me I didn’t know that the water was so cold, because my friend Joel threw me the bucket I saw the stars, doing the challenge was a freezing idea.

In my opinion, the person that got the idea of creating this challenge was really clever, because now thousands of people know what the ALS is and what you feel when you suffer this disease. The purpose of throwing yourself a bucket is that when the cold water arrives at your body, you can’t move, you’re paralyzed for a few seconds, and that is what you feel when you have the ALS you can only move your mouth the rest of your body is immovable. The real cause of this challenge is donating money for the foundation because many people (usually from Spain...) did the challenge and they recorded the video and post it on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram but they didn’t donate money!!! That is a really bad idea because there are many foundations for the ALS and they need it a lot of money to help these people so, if I donate 10 Euros to the foundation and I’m not a very rich man (yet) there are many famous people that can donate a lot of money for a really good cause.

Definitely, I think that there should be much more ideas like this to help people that sometimes are forgotten from our society and they have the right to know that we are with them trying to help on their disease.

I challenge my English teacher on the Ice Bucket Challenge.

THE ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE

The ALS Ice bucket challenge is a campaign for collecting money for the  amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the challenge encourages nominated participants to be filmed having a bucket of ice water thown on their heads and then nominating others to do the same and if they don't they would have to donate money to an ALS Association.
I think this is a great idea, it was done by a lot of famous people so it has become very popular, but now it has lost its essence, because people have changed the challenge and now, instead of "If you don't do it you have to donate money" they ask for a free dinner or a free breakfast if the nominated doesn't do it.
A thing about it that we don't know is if all the people who have done the challenge have also donated to an association, if not, his solidarity would be kind of fake.
What could happen now is that associations which help people with strange illnesses might try to start similar campaigns on social networks but probably not with the same success this one has had.
This social phenomenon wouldn't have been possible without social networks and famous people, so I think that the ones who are influent and rich people could take advantage on their status and publicize solidarity campaigns more often.
I think there's one thing people haven't done well, this is that, for example, Spanish people who have donated have donated to the American ALS Association, not to the Spanish one, and I think this makes no sense.
All in all, I've loved this ALS Ice Bucket Challenge campaign, and I think it's an amazing way to collect money, but while this challenge has become more and more popular it has become, at the same time, less solidary.

THE ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE

It was few months ago when I started to see some videos about this phenomenon in The USA. As the video of “Kids React” says, it consists of throwing to yourself a bucket full of cold water and ice so, once it is all over you, you can feel how people with the ALS disease live.

It makes you feel as if you were paralyzed, not even capable to make a step forward. The point is to increase people’s interest on this incurable disease so everybody is aware of what it comes with it: the money you need to adapt a house, the amount of time you need to dedicate to the affected person, the shock due to the strong changes in someone’s life... The creators of this “challenge” wanted to raise the donations to charities and to labs that are trying to find any kind of solution or help.

Adventurous people who have dared to do this experience should make a contribution to any of those organizations that help families with ALS or to any group of researchers that are dealing with a cure.

Personally, I’ve seen many videos of people covering themselves with cold water; however, I’ve seen really few of them posting the message of their contribution to those charities. That’s because most of the people have done it, but not everyone has donated a single euro. Actually, it came out on the news few weeks ago that, in the USA, less than half of the people who have tried this challenge have contributed on the research. What I mean is that, everybody can be brave for a short-10 second video and a post on “Instagram” but the thing is that not all of them are making an effort to help those families.

To sum up with, I’m not saying it’s been a bad idea cause even if people haven’t donated any money, it’s been a huge movement to support people who are dealing with this disease, and now we all are more aware of what it means and what it takes to suffer it. So, at least, this new trend has ended up being a really positive thing.

THE ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE

The origins of the Ice Bucket Challenge are many, but it is recognized as the first to tie challenge to supporting the ALS fundation. Eventually now, many people, famous and not famous are helping to promote this activity in the social nets.

“ALS” is a serious illness that drestroys nervous cells and lives. The Ice Buchet Challenge is the latest craze “slacktivism” that helps raise donations to found research in the ongoing struggle to end this terrible disease.

I think that it's not the funny videos that matter. It's the power of  young people. And now through the social sector like instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

And I also think that if they wanted to give money to a cause that is not fun,  I do not understand why  all the videos I've seen everyone's laughing and happy, but I also hope that if they do it will be to promote, not for laugh

Ice Bucket Challenge: Opinion.

I’m in love with the charitable challenges! But Ice Bucket Challenge became viral. And when something becomes viral…

I’m going to explain myself: Ice Bucket Challenge is a very good idea to help people with ALS. BUT THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT DON’T KNOW WHY IT IS AND THEY THROW ON THEMSELVES FROZEN WATER. This is so horrible! Please, inform yourself before! The Ice Bucket Challenge is to help people, not to see how people are wet and cold! (I’m sorry if I’m a bit rude, but things like these make me get VERY angry.)

Ice Bucket Challenge is good if you donate money for ALS investigation. I didn’t to the challenge, but I  disrespectful.

And this is it! I don’t know if it’s poor but, yeah, this is it!

ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE. Ricard C. (2n BATX B)

The ice bucket challenge

The ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is a degenerative disease. It doesn’t allow the move to sick people. It wasn’t  too “popular” before the viral of the ice bucket challenge.

Probably, the most famous patient is Stephen Hawking.

The challenge consists of throwing a bucket of cold water over your head. The water must be very cold to simulate ALS patients feel. When the person has finished. he should nominate three people, those who have been nominated have 24 hours to accept the challenge or they will have to donate X dollar for ALS.

Well, that’s fantastic, even better when famous characters take part of this viral and it became to be trending toping. But there is one problem, if everyone does the challenge, who will donate money? Another dramatic question is the next one, some (I say some but I could say many) famous people announce they will donate money, and after all they simply don’t do it.

I really think that people should donate (if they want of course) by himself or herself , and not because of a challenge. The ALS has been living with the humanity for long years, why people didn’t think to donate money five years ago?

The answer is many of the persons who have done the challenge are “posers”

ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE

The ice bucket challenge is an activity that consists of throwing a bucket of ice water on someone’s head to encourage donations to research for an illness called ALS. This challenge is really famous over the world because all the socials media are full of videos of people doing it and nominating other people.

As we know, a lot of famous people have done the challenge and most of them have donated a lot of money for the foundation. This is helping a lot to find a cure for the illness.

In English class we have watched how kids react to this challenge. Most of them knew about it or at least they have seen some famous people doing it. But some of them didn’t know why they throw a bucket of ice water and they thought it was just for fun. The kids threw themselves a bucket of ice water and the program donated $100 for each kid.

In my opinion this challenge is helping a lot of people and thanks to all the people that have donated money, sick people will cure.

But there are also people who just do it for fun without donating. Let’s see, the challenge was created for donating money and if they don’t donate, it is pointless. There are a lot of complaints about people who don’t donate and I think it is unfair and selfish to do it without helping people.

A lot of people that I look up to have updated a video of themselves in Instagram doing the challenge and it was really fun to watch.

I was nominated by a close friend but I haven’t done it yet.  Gaby, the girl I am doing the USA exchange with, has done the challenge and she has donated money.

In conclusion, I think this is the best way of collecting money for a research because a lot of people can do it, from the youngest to the oldest. It is really funny and refreshing and it’s the best way of make people know about the illness.

Ice Bucket Challenge

The video we have seen in class I think shows really well the problem “ice bucket challenge” has.

The “ice bucket challenge” was been iniciated by Corey Griffin this summer with the purpose of increasing donations for research into ALS. The movement has become very popular and about two months later all the word knows what it is

As the children in the video say, many people do the challenge because of popularity and they don’t give money to ALS’s association. That suggests that people don’t care about the finallity because it don’t provide nothing special to them, but they are interested to look like generous people.

Another comment in the video has made me think is the “ice bucket challenge” is a way to waste water. I don’t think so. In summer almost everyone uses water to beat the head, and the water is used with the finallity of the challenge don’t influence in other countries are situated across the world.

In conclusion, the “ice bucket challenge” has been a great idea to aware people about this uncommon disease, but it hasn't contributed to charity as Corey Griffin and ALS patients were expecting.

ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE. Ramsés M. (2n batx A)

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
Good idea or cruel strategy?

We all know that last summer, and probably nowadays too; a new phenomenon has arrived: the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. It has been appearing in every single social network since the beginnings of the last summer. It basically consists in throwing iced water (that includes ice on the bucket) over the nominated person. This way, the “affected” person suffers the same cerebral damage just for a few seconds that a person with ALS feels every day (it basically freezes every part of the body, it even denies your ability to talk). The system of the challenge is really easy: you usually get nominated by a friend that has done it before, and you gotta do it before 24h and also donate as much as you want to the foundation, but always donate something.

I don’t know it for sure, I haven’t searched it anywhere, but I can assume that millions of people have done it (even celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio, George Bush, 50 Cent, Eminem, Cristiano Ronaldo, Carles Puyol have done the challenge) and that fact has helped a lot to the ALS foundation, that has probably raised their earnings in a really huge way. But here comes my “question”, my “dilemma”... Would the ALS have won the same amount of money if they hadn’t converted their active donatives into a social network game?

I’m completely not criticising the way that the foundation has played this card, that has completely won the game and has helped a lot of people suffering that disease. I’m probably just attacking our society. What I really want to say is: Would the same people have donated if donating hadn’t turned into a “game” or a “challenge” or just a funny thing? The answer is no. It really makes me happy to see millions of euros donated to a really important organization that helps people who suffer from horrible diseases such as ALS, but it really makes me go mad the fact of knowing that probably half of the people wouldn’t have donated if their friends hadn’t nominated them.

Donating money to the ALS foundation is a perfect habit, it’s an activity that should make everyone proud of themselves, and everyone should give the importance it deserves. But… are we that lost into hypocrisy to just ignore people dying of awful diseases until anyone nominates us to fight against it? Is that fair for the people that suffers it? Waiting and watching your life passing by until you realize someone has just invented a “challenge” that makes everyone donate? It’s beautiful to see a lot of people donating for a good cause, but it kills my innocence the fact of knowing that they don’t do it on purpose (at least a lot of people), they just do it for fun, for being able to say: Hey, I donated!

We are all humans, and we suffer every day, and pain hits us so hard many times in our lives. But tell me, when people help you...Do they do it just for fun? Just for telling they’ve helped you? It is great to help, but helping should just be an automatic thing, like an instinct, an involuntary act… Helping is great but no one should force, stare or whatever anyone to help another… Remember, they are your acts what count, not the people that have seen them.

Ice bucket challenge

Hi, I hope you’ve enjoyed your holidays this summer, because  I did, actually I think this summer has been the best one in my life.

Well, I’m writing you because I have just seen a video from the famous challenge “Ice Bucket”, as you already know, it is a challenge done to donate some money for a disease, so this challenge was explained and shown to some children who later, did it.

In my opinion that action was great because in one way or in another it motivates more people to do the challenge, and if people see really young children doing it, why can not adults do it ? The more people wet, the more money we get.

On the other hand what I don’t like from this challenge is that we have seen lots of famous people, here in Spain, doing it but we have recollected very little money and comparing our results with the Americans’ ones, ours results makes people laugh, so let’s think of donating some money to help more people as possible.

I wanna hear your opinion too!

ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE. Ana F. (1 BATX B)

The ice Bucket challenge

The ice Bucket challenge is an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on someone’s head to help people with the problem of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and encourage donations to research. ALS was first found in 1869 by French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot but this idea began in the sporting world and has been used with other causes in the past.  As long as people keep participating, the challenge will keep going.  ALS is an illness that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.  The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. This kind of people do their future ahead and dreams of a lifetime, because they have their family with them.

Nowadays all people in the world know about this activity. But if people hadn’t had this great idea probably the battle against this illness wouldn’t have advanced. As we promote this intent,  as we will staff these patients. So it’s completely important to have a consciousness of this illness and a good heart to want to help. Few people are unpleasant or miserly because until rich people have done this activity. So if they can do it,  you too.

In my opinion, I think it’s important that people have a good initiative. My mum said to me when I was a child that someday scientists will research the problems of all illnesses. Remember I have never known my  grandfather or a grandmother. My only grandfather that I could know was Antonio, but he died of the cancer. If scientists could know the recovery. probably I would have stayed more time with him. There wasn’t any progress for this sickness in his period. So I wish scientists will research all problems.

I was nominated for this ice bucket challenge and I hung it on instagram. Later I nominated three of my friends that had to do too. My parents donated money for this company with the idea of helping this illness. I have a lot of friends that have done this activity but not all people have donated anything. Well I know about  one friend that has donated some food that I think it’s another cool idea.

KIDS REACT TO ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE

In August I went to United States with my parents, a friend and her parents. When we were looking for a place to have dinner in San Francisco we saw a man doing the Ice Bucket Challenge. He was talking and two girls threw two buckets of water and ice above his head. We were surprised because we have never heard about Ice Bucket Challenge and ALS, and because the weather at night in San Francisco is a bit cold.
A few days later we saw in an American TV programme so many people doing the same thing than that man in the street and we discovered this incredible and charitable challenge.
Then when we returned to Spain, almost everyone was doing it. To do it you must have been nominated by someone, and when you do the video to share it on instagram or facebook, you have to say for whom you have been nominated and the three people you want to nominate. This challenge is accompanied by a donation that you have to do if you accept it.
I think that is a good project to raise money for a good reason, a minority disease that doesn’t have any cure or treatment and that is lethal. Thanks to this campaign, they have raised the amount of last year multiplied by twenty.  In Spain, this association has raised 700.000 euros that is a good amount of money, but it is not comparable with the amount that it has raised in United States, 88’ 5 million euros.
This initiative started in United States and Spain decided to join in.  Not only  have they done it  to raise money, they have also done it to make people know this disease, the ALS.
Ice Bucket Challenge started two years ago, when the college baseball player, Pete Frates, was diagnosed with ALS. On August 7, in Boston's Copley Square 200 people went there to throw an ice bucket above their head to raise money and let people know of the existence of this disease that has no cure or treatment.

ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE. Cristina M. (1 BATX B)

Ice Bucket Challenge

This challenge lays in throwing on you a bucket with water and ice to make the water very cold. And the reason of this challenge is to make people aware of an illness called ALS. This illness means Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. For example Stephen Hawking has this illness.
A lot of people have done this challenge including important people like George W. Bush and Obama or actors like Patrick Stewart (the teacher of X-Men) Miley Cyrus or Charlie Sheen (of Two and a Half Men). But in Spain people do the challenge but don’t donate money to the cause (Spain is always different).
I myself have made the challenge and I donate $ 10 to the charity of this illness. And after I nominate my father and two friends and one of them is Aitor but they still haven’t done it. I’m angry with them until they do it!
So where there are lots of people doing the same thing there are always lots of "ice bucket challenge fails". These videos are very funny! There are videos of people who drop their bucket full of water to the head (it has to hurt a lot!) There are also videos of people being wet after challenge slip and fall to the ground. Even videos of people pulling water with an excavator like a waterfall and the excavator just giving them in the head. But one that makes me laugh a lot is one that is going to throw the bucket to another and it just pulling himself.
It is also true that there have been accidents with this challenge and some people and some people have ended up in the hospital so be careful with doing stupid things can end badly.
