SAVE OUR PLANET. Andreu D. (2 ESO B)

Help to save our planet!

All of us know that the planet isn’t ok but, do we do everything we should do to help it? Here I’m going to show you how I would help to the planet salvation.

The first thing that I would do is that the investigation of new and non-contaminating fuels such as hydrogen and others were much sponsored to make the process shorter. Fossil fuels are one of the most contaminating things because it’s used by everyone that go to the work by car or the planes and it is a very large part of the CO2 that is spread to the atmosphere. CO2 is a greenhouse gas, greenhouse gases contribute to the global warming, that in a little amount is good not to freeze the earth, but in a big amount is very dangerous because it can melt the polar caps.

Another way to reduce pollution is the investigation of the nuclear fusion. It doesn’t make radioactive waste because it turns the used material into new one to be used again and generate more waste and use it. This would be a very powerful energy that would make disappear the thermal centrals of the world that pollute a lot, because thy use coal and other fuels.

With this and more ideas that can be in your daily life like going in bus instead of in car or others, we can help our planet and us only by decreasing the global warming.

But it will still being a problem that will not disappear by only these things, our mistakes will still be there for years.

WRITING A BIOGRAPHY: SOPHIA PALACIOS.
Sophia Marie Palacios was born at Shady Grove Hospital in Montgomery Village, Maryland in the United States on July 28, 2000. As a baby, Sophia lived with her mother, her father and her older sister, Olivia in a house in Montgomery Village. By the time she was 3 years old, her little brother, Ian was born. Sophia has brown eyes and dark brown hair, and has always been very short.
She attended Laytonville Elementary School from ages 5 until 11, when she then switched to a catholic middle school, called Saint Peters. In her teenager years, Sophia went to Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, Maryland, where she still currently attends. Sophia does not know what she wants to study in college, but she knows that she will not pursue a career in Math or Science.
As a child, Sophia loved Dora, animals, and screaming a lot. She enjoyed playing with her big sister and little brother, going to the beach, swimming, and playing with dolls. Growing up, Sophia took dance lessons 4 days a week, as well as playing various sports for short spans of time. Currently Sophia is on her school's Pom/Dance Team and she is also a member of her school's Theater Program. She also enjoys participating in service and helping others.

MY EXCHANGE PARTNER ELLIE

My exchange partner is Ellie. She was born on August 25, 2000 in Redlands, California, which is close to Los Angeles.

Now she lives in Maryland, which is on the East Coast of the United States. She lives with her parents, her sister and also three dogs who are named Bud, Bentley, and Luna.

Ellie likes to go to the beach in the summer and be in warm weather. She also likes to travel, which is why she is in Barcelona right now. Her favorite color is blue because of her eyes and her favorite animal is the duck that’s why she has been asking her mum to have one but she never agrees.

She goes to school at Good Counsel High School, which is located very close to her house and it’s a catholic school in Onley.  She takes 8 classes, some of which are difficult for her. Her least favorite class is literature, which is so boring. And her favorite one is Spanish, as she is in the highest level.

She explained me that before coming to Barcelona she had been two weeks in Canada which is one of her favorite places to ski; she really had a good time there as she went with her classmates although is not the first time she has been in that beautiful country.

Ellie really liked this experience and every single activity we have done during the exchange program such as the Park Güell, el Barri Gòtic, els Bunkers or la Sagrada Familia. She really liked the Spanish food and said it was the best one she ever tried.

Hope we see us again soon, either in the USA or in Barcelona because both of us have been getting along so well during all this time and for me is now like my American sister.

MY BROTHER

I have two brothers actually, but I want to talk about the middle one.

My middle brother, who is 7 years apart of me, is called Isaac and he 23 years old (he does seem as the oldest). As he’s my brother, he takes after me a little bit, although he is taller, stronger, and more intelligent, but the latest one sometimes.  He’s pleasant, affectionate, joyful, amusing, helpful, reliable, often he is slothful and lazy and occasionally he turns to sulky but only if I stare him, but in a few minutes all becomes as what it was before.

Usually, when I’m bored or sleepy and I don’t know how to entertain myself, I wonder about what I can do. The idea that comes up is to play with my brother with our cell phones. We play together to a game called “Clash Royale”, which is the perfect game that my brother and I can cope with. We always ask each other for a battle and I obviously win him but we have a good time, though.

Isaac, who plays basketball in an elder league, is good enough at sports. In summer, we go to Heron City courts and we play basketball together there. I always go in the same team as him because we need each other, I mean, he’s tall and he can make points easily but he needs me because I have to pass him the ball within a strategy. In fact, he is the MVP of his team due to his ability of making points easily as I said, so he has a good shooting.

My brother is a person who I can always trust with all. However, sometimes he ignores me because I’m tiresome, but at the end, he helps me and we have good times together.

Otilia García

Otilia García was born in León, Spain on 15 May 1932. She grew up in a really big family with five siblings and her parents. No sooner she had left school than she started working on the field with her family.

When she was 27, she got married to Abel Blas. Right after getting married they moved to Venezuela, because they were looking for better job opportunities. Spain was still economically recovering from the civil-war at the time, and other countries, such as Venezuela, provided more offerings than Spain did back then.

After many years of living in Caracas, which is the capital of Venezuela, they started their own business. They were the owners of two perfumeries. These two businesses were really important in Otilia’s life, because she always loved the sales-world and working there made her extremely happy.

Years after, Otilia and her husband Abel sold one of the perfumeries because it was becoming overwhelming to run both places at the same time. Later on, the perfumery left caught fire, so they had to stop working there. They had other projects going on after the perfumeries. Otilia and Abel had two children Pedro and Jannette.

She had a wonderful life in Venezuela, she lived there for 40 years until she came back to Spain in 2001. Since then, her and her husband have been living in Granollers near to their children and grandchildren.

Biography: My dad

Shuo Tang Yu was born in Anhui, China on 2 December 1955. He used to live with his mom in a poor neighborhood next to a paper factory. As a kid, he would go to school and meet with his friends, who still keep in contact with each other nowadays.

My dad spent his childhood going to school and by the time he was 10 years old he realized he wasn’t doing good enough in important subjects like math or literature. It was then when he discovered that his true talent and passion was drawing. No sooner had he left school that he was already dreaming of becoming an artist so he pursued this dream for years.

At the age of 21, he got a scholarship for Beijing’s art university, that was what he wanted since the beginning. He had just got his degree on graphic design when he got a job as a typographer in a publishing house. But everything changed when he decided to move to Spain. When my dad has something in mind he does everything he can to achieve it and so he did. He started to take Spanish lessons in his free time and after a few years he finally moved here.

As soon as he arrived, he started looking for a place to work and he found one in an art shop in Diagonal Mar. That was where my mom was working and after they met each other they started dating and they eventually married.

What i admire about my dad is that he’s a very decided and ambitious person and he also knows a lot about how to achieve the goals you set for yourself. He always knows how to give me advice because he has been through a lot of tough moments in his life and he’s always there to help me. He’s a very inspiring person and definitely my role model.

OUR PARTNER’S BIOGRAPHY

Rhiannan was born in Puerto Rico on the 31 of July of 2000, where she lived for the first fourteen years of her life and learned to speak both English and Spanish.

By the age of fourteen, she moved to Maryland. Her parents, who both worked for an American federal agency, were given a promotion, which required that they moved to the United States of America. She is an only child, which means she receives a lot of love and attention from her mom and dad.

Rhiannan goes to a high school called Our Lady of Good Counsel, which is a private Catholic school in Olney, Maryland where students spend there four years. She is in her third year at the school, which means she is a Junior. She has to drive to her school, which is thirty minutes away from her house.

When she is at school, she goes to four different classes a day. The subjects that interest her the most are maths and science and she hopes to be an bioengineer in the future. She likes almost all types of music, shopping and warm weather. She also likes to spend time with her closest friends and family. She finds traveling and learning about new cultures funny, which is why she applied for the Barcelona Exchange Program.

She is really happy to be in Barcelona with us and she is very thankful that we have made Barcelona feel like her second home. She hopes never to forget this experience, which has been incredibly fun.

Description of my grandmother

My grandmother is 70 years old, but in this case the age is only a number. She feels like a woman of 50 and it’s not a joke! She is from Barcelona but she has blood from “Andalucía”, because her parents were from there.

She has red hair (it’s not natural so don’t worry hahaha), brown eyebrows, little ears and little nose too, tiny red lips and green eyes. For me, my grandma is like a woman of 60 years, because she conserves her body so good (she does aqua gym, fitness, yoga, tai-chi and Pilates).

She is 5.5 foot and weighs 176 pounds, she has long arms in comparison with the body and the legs a bit shorter. She loves her nails, because she cares of them every week, every day: she visits the place where she grooms and cleans them.

She is a fanatic of the TV quiz show ‘’Saber y ganar’’ because she has seen all the programmes. She likes spending time at the market of Virrei Amat, where she worked for 40 years approximately. She is a woman who had been married twice but, unfortunately for all of us, my two grandparents are in heaven

She likes the colour red and her favourite number is the 2, she likes crosswords, Sudokus and table games such as Domino or Cluedo. When we’re in family reunions, like Christmas, she is the focus of the dinner because she spends a lot of time talking but not eating… It’s curious!

The only thing that differences her from the people of her age is her spicy personality and her anecdotes will stay between us for lots of years.

ETHAN BLAIR, from OLGCHS, Maryland

My big fella Ethan Blair!

He lives in Olney, Maryland, this town is right outside Washington DC. The people who live with him are his 3 sisters Charlotte, Emily and Allie, his parents Karen and Steve and his dog Mr. Guster.

Ethan moved to Maryland when he was 3, from New Jersey, a state which is located about 3 hours from Washington.

Ethan plays lacrosse, a sport which is very similar to roller hockey but instead of a puck on the ground they use a ball in the air. He started playing this when he was about 7 years old, he plays for his school Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, which I visited when I stayed with him in October.

When Ethan is not playing lacrosse he likes to ski, ride his dirt bike or go surfing. Ethan has lots of friends who I also met on my trip there, a few also play lacrosse, which is very common.

I like Ethan very much and I'm sad that he has to go, he has been enjoying staying with me and my family and he doesn't want to leave.

WRITING A BIOGRAPHY. Genís F. (1BTX A)

My grandmother Conxa

Last week, our English teacher told us to write a biography of one of our grandparents. I have three grandparents alive: Conxa, my father’s mother; Pau, my mother’s father and Rosa, which is not genetically part of my family (she was my babysitter when I was a little kid because it was holiday in the kindergarten but it wasn’t for my parents) but, despite this, I have always considered her my grandmother, so I have had three grannies!

I didn’t know which grandparent to write about until today when I’ve decided to write my grandma Conxa’s biography because my dad was talking with her by phone so I’ve seized the opportunity to interview her. She has told me that she only remembers few things about her past but I think it’ll be enough. Let’s check it!

It was on 27 March 1935 in a rural house of the remote village of Alcanar where Conxa was born in. She went to school for first time when she was five in a strictly religious nunnery. By the time she was eight, she received communion and, after that, she received the catholic confirmation (she was the latest of her class to receive both of them).

Later, she moved to another religious school near the village library. That time, the school was so different from now, the boys and the girls studied in different schools, and a boy and a girl couldn’t talk to each other. One day, Conxa looked at a boy* (which after would become her boyfriend) and one of her classmates tattled it to the teacher. My grandmother was physically punished for it!

Furthermore they (my grandma and her classmates) didn’t do exams (what a happy life!), and the teacher organized them with the most intelligent girl on the front of the class and the “less intelligent” one on the back. She was in the second position but it was because she cheated on the most intelligent girl.

Although they didn’t do exams, every year an inspector went to check students’ skills. My grandmother only studied one point from the entire book which they had to study. Luckily for her, the inspector only asked her the question she had studied and she was awarded as the most intelligent girl in the school. She was really a luckily girl!

By the age of fourteen, Conxa definitely left school. No sooner had she left school than she started sewing for 10 pesetas a month. For the first time, she saw men entering to the dressmaker’s store. This year (1949), she had, at least, three boyfriends: Joaquim, Francesc and Eliseu. A morning she was working very hard, a young boy of 16 years called Juanito entered to the store with comics (tebeos). Conxa just looked at him, and she immediately remembered the day she saw him in the school. Conxa fell in love again, but this time it was different from the other boyfriends she had had, she saw him as her fate.

Then, when Conxa was fifteen, she was still dating with Joaquim because although she loved Juanito, she had never seen him again since the day he entered in the store. On Easter’s day, Conxa went with her friends and Joaquim to the Our Lady of Remei’s mountain (the symbolic mountain of Alcanar) to have lunch. This day, Conxa argued with Joaquim. My grandma was desolated and she was walking alone in the arid mountain when suddenly a young boy riding a bike bumped into her. As soon as Conxa saw him, she realized this boy was Juanito. For the first time in their parallel life they talked to each other. Juanito asked her: -“Why are you crying?” and Conxa explained the truth to Juanito. He comforted my grandmother and he invited her to get on the bike with him. Then, they sat in the street and they talked for a while.

But Juanito had to go to work in the country in winter and he had to go dancing to Vinaròs or Sant Carles de la Ràpita on summer. Conxa, once again, was alone. She tried to have fun going to the bullring. There was a sad day when she was eighteen, that she went to the bullring and the entire scaffold (there was a kind of scaffold) fell on her. Soon after that, Juanito arrived, rescued her and called the doctor. She was so wounded that her family was already crying for her death but, fortunately, she could save her life.

After that, Juanito spent more time with her and even he went to talk with Conxa’s parents to buy her love. Conxa’s parents didn’t like Juanito but, after weeks of long talks they accepted the marriage. They get married in 1964 and Juanito started working as Alcanar’s gas station owner. Besides, they were winning enough money to raise children. So, in 1966 my father, Joan Ramon, was born and in 1973 my uncle, Jesús Josep, was born (in 1969 another boy was born but he died at birth).

This is all the life he has explained me. It’s an amazing life, isn’t it? Now she lives alone (Juanito died in 2014) but she’s happy and proud of all what she has achieved because for her there’s anything else important in the life but family. She’s grateful to God we all live wealthy and happy and she wishes us a bright future and, if it’s possible, a free nation.

WRITING A BIOGRAPHY. Antoni A. (1BTX A)

The life of my grandfather.

My grandfather was born in Morillo de Liena, in Huesca. Since he was a child he was always a naughty boy but with a great heart. This is the history of my loved grandfather who is a referent to follow for me and for my family.

This story begins in August the 5th of 1941. My grandfather was born in a poor family of Morillo, so he always knew how to keep his belly full. This boy was called “Antoni“, like his father, like my father and finally like me.

His childhood was so hard, and intact, he didn’t receive many presents because after the Civil War in Spain most of the people were poor and they spent their money on food and clothes.

By the time he was 14, he began to work in construction in the village next to Morillo, Campo. He had to go to Campo on foot, and the climate of Huesca was very cold, but his family needed the money so he had to make an effort for them. So no parties for Antoni during his adolescence.

As soon as he was 25, he married the woman he loves, Celia, my grandmother and to get a job they had to move to Barcelona, where a cousin of my grandmother had a house for them. My grandparents spent really good years in Barcelona and my grandfather had the chance to start a construction business that went very well.

After that, my father, called Antonio too, was born,  and just then my grandfather had to move to Madrid to attend his business so he left his family and Barcelona, because without the business they would become poor.

When he came back to Barcelona, Alberto and Anabel were born, they will be in the future my uncle and my aunt. So they were years of happiness for my grandfather, near his family and with a job to feed them. His two sons and his daughter went to my School, Manyanet Sant Andreu, in the past it was known with the name of “Los Padres“. And the three did a career, my father is veterinary and my aunt studied at ESADE and my uncle studied architecture, and they became married too.

As I explained my grandfather was always a fighter so once more, he had to deal with a cancer in the prostate. Luckily he won this battle too, like he is winning nowadays the battle against his Osteoarthritis in the knee.

So that was the life of my grandfather, nowadays he is living in Barcelona and he is enjoying of a deserved rest in his house and making walks around Sant Andreu with Celia. But he is always busy taking care of the most little grandchild, Laura, and making her laugh because he has always been a very funny guy, and very protective.

BIOGRAPHY

Alicia Martínez Hernández was born in Barcelona  in 1943. Her family didn’t have too much money, but with my great-grandfather’s much effort she got a good life.

She studied at what is now Turó Blau until she was 14. As soon as she left school she went to a women's school, in the centre of the city, where only girls were accepted, and there they learnt how to cook, sew and other similar things.

After that and until her father died, she worked with him in the workshop he had in the neighbourhood, with simple things. She couldn’t study more. During few years she was working for the Super 3 channel, making cards for their members.

She got married with Jordi Cunillera Guivernau in 1966. She had just got married when she got her first son, Albert Cunillera  (1967, Barcelona) and three years later her second and last son Jordi Cunillera (1970, Barcelona).

Nowadays she keeps living in Sagrera, where she was born and has four grandchildren.

My grandmother’s biography

My grandmother’s name is Pascuala Casas Rueda, she was born on the 15th of March 1930 in Noguera de Albarracín, in the province of Teruel.

Her parents were a poor matrimony and they had to work hard every day. As soon as she started going to school she moved to a little village of Valencia, because of the Spanish Civil War. She was there refuging at her uncle’s house.

By the time the war finished she returned to Noguera de Albarracín. Her parents didn’t have much money, so by the age of sixteen she came to Barcelona to start working for a Catalan rich family as a servant. One day, she had just got into the Born market when she saw a young boy, and she fell in love. It would be better to say that both of them fell in love. My grandparents got married on the 21st of September 1964 in the city of Barcelona.

No sooner had they married that she got pregnant. Their first baby was my aunt Carme, and in 1968 my father Eduard was born. She started her new life as a wife and a mother, typical life of women at that time. She is very proud of what she had done, and of her son and daughter. She always says that we are her fingers; she could never cut one of them.

Going on with her life, in 1996 my aunt got married and she moved from Barcelona to la Vall d’Uixó a village in Castelló. As soon as my cousin Pau was born my grandparents bought a house there. Then, in 2000 I was born, after me, my cousin Laura and the last one was my brother in 2004.

By the year 2006 my grandparents had travelled a lot from Castelló to Barcelona, but my grandfather became ill. After his death, my granny got very depressed, but we made her cheer up.

Nowadays, she is living with us here in Barcelona and with my cousins in Castelló. All of us love her a lot and she is a very important person in our life. Now, while I am writing this I have got her next to me and she sends you a kiss.
