TED TALK: The best kindergarten you have ever seen Núria C. (2n batx B)

On this original Ted Talk, the architect Takaharu Tezuka explains to us an innovative kindergarten in a school in the city of Tokyo. The explanation of that man was very curious and comic, with many images and videos of the construction and the children playing on it. From the Ted Talk, I would like to remark on many aspects.

First of all, Takaharu mentions that the main objective of the kindergarten is that the students experience the advantages and disadvantages of life, in a real society and in contact with nature, one of the most important things we have. From my point of view, this school is amazing, boys and girls can fully develop their imagination, as well as different kinds of intelligence: artistic, scientific… The characteristic that I most like from the project is the rope around the trees, the structure of the rook with a round shape, so the children can run all they want. Another aspect that impacts me is the classrooms, where there is no boundary between outside and outside and there is no acoustic barrier. This is very important so children can develop interest, decisions to difficulties and also concentration.

To conclude, this Ted Talk and the idea of the kindergarten was amazing. I hope one day we could make a similar project in our city!

TED TALK: Grit: The power of passion and perseverance Ramon V. (2n batx A)

Succeeding in life requires two things, passion and grit. As explained in this video, grit is the value that, as proved in many different studies, leads people to success.
According to the speaker, psychologist Angela Lee Duckworth, talent doesn’t make you gritty, instead, commitment does. The main reason why perseverant kids do finally succeed in their tasks is because they don’t believe failure is a permanent condition. The act of trying again and again is what makes someone achieve their objectives.
From my point of view, I strongly agree with this mindset. Talent isn’t useful if there is no
commitment and perseverance on improving it. Grit is something you must develop by yourself, it’s something inside us which makes the difference between people who achieve their dreams, people who follow them but will never achieve them, or people who don’t even try following them because they just think they are out of their reach.

In conclusion, neither IQ, physical health nor social intelligence are the way of accomplishing life’s objectives, only grit can help us on approaching success.

TED TALK: How to speak so that people want to listen. Sandra S. (2n batx A)

We always try to get people’s attention while we’re speaking, but it isn’t always that easy. From my point of view, it’s such a difficult task making people listen to you, because your voice, your body language and the surrounding are elements which make people get distracted.
Firstly, I really enjoyed the way Julian Treasure made the Ted Talk. He has been clear composing a list with everything you need to avoid in order to make people listen to you. For instance gossip, judge, negativity, complaining, excuses, lying and dogmatism are items you should keep away from your speech if you want to get people’s attention.
Moreover, honesty, authenticity, integrity and love are the most important values and I completely agree with the speaker. At the end of the talk, he shows an exercise that he does everytime he speaks in public, highlighting how important are body and voice movements if you want to achieve the goal of getting attention. I think I’m going to start doing this exercise before speaking in public, let’s see if it works.

TED TALK. The power of introverts Clàudia G.P. (2n batx B)

Why can't I be an extrovert? Or do I need to be more sociable? these are thoughts that introverted people make throughout their lives at many times.
As Susan Cain said in her ted talk “The power of introverts”, our world has three types of people: introverts, extroverts and ambiverts. But nowadays although we have been fighting  not to exclude diversity, few people have remembered this issue. As a consequence, many people and entities have the perpetual stigma that extroverts are better than introverts and this isn't true!
In my opinion, I totally agree with Mrs. Susan, each person is different and that is why you don’t have to follow the same method, neither to work nor to live. Introversion is finding comfort in one’s self, they don't require social stimulation like an extrovert. They "recharge" by having alone time, doing things by themselves, and that's fine.
I am an introvert, and I function on my own. I go to school, I have extracurricular  and I live happy. And yes, I express myself perfectly fine, just not nearly as forwardly outspoken unless I think it’s necessary but that doesn’t at all mean I am incapable.
In conclusion, we shouldn’t deny to people to have their own character, because the only thing we achieve is that the person feels oppressed and it would be less creative.

TED TALK. Looks aren't everything. Hugo F. (2n batx B)

We tend to spend a great deal of time in front of the mirror, brushing our hair, choosing our best clothes and perfume thinking that if we have a good looking we will be better than others who don’t have it.
Personally, I believe that what's much more important is who we are inside, having a good sense of humour, compatible personality, being a  responsible and polite person and for sure having good hygiene because nowadays people who spend a huge quantity of money in hypebeast clothes are people who are not confident and pretend to show that they are wearing the most modern clothes.
Furthermore, if you are attractive, people will automatically assume good things about you, give you more leeway with your personality. If you are unattractive it's basically the opposite, you have to try so hard to prove that your ugly appearance isn't representative of your personality but the truth is that the ugly person can be funnier, more intelligent and a better person that the one that has a good appearance so we don’t have to judge the person by the way they look.
On the whole, I think the way we look doesn’t say everything about the person and we have to be judged for whom we are and not for how we look.

TED TALK: Looks aren’t everything. Believe me, I’m a model Júlia L. (2n batx A)

Cameron Russell is a professional model and activist who did a ten minute Ted talk in 2012. In which  she talks about the reality of being a model in this society and the path to do it.

She says looks aren’t everything because they don’t define who you are. Russell explained that her appearance is a consequence of her genetics and legacy. She’s white, thin, tall and pretty, like the majority of models in the big industry. That is starting to change, but we go through baby steps. Although there’s a major factor, stylists. The pictures we see in magazines, commercials, instagram, etc aren’t natural. The models do poses, and yes they’re pretty and thin and all of that. But they don’t always have perfect hair and makeup, flattering clothes and the perfect lighting to embrace their best qualities. And the most important thing Cameron Russell said, they don’t show who are the persons in those pictures.
Actually she explains the pressure in the modeling career, because everyone expects the best of them always. And I think they may be a little overwhelmed by the fact they work with persons as thin, pretty and sexy as them. She confessed she’s insecure and she don’t really identify in her good photos made by professionals.

In my opinion, we tend to see the qualities others have but then we see our weaknesses. Also there’s a part of our life we always want what we don’t have, and we’ll never have. In my case was blue eyes and straight hair. I could damage my hair and change it, but I decided not to. I learn to appreciate it as natural as it is. And with the Ted Talk I felt sort of identified because in my life I’ve seen and heard so many people wishing to have or be different things, but in the end it doesn’t matter. The truth is that there’s always something to improve. Most people think that I’m lucky with my genetics (which I know I am), but the confidence that we have in ourselves and the acceptance of our bodies doesn’t come of the compliments we receive, comes from our self love. It doesn’t matter how many people sees you pretty or sexy, because if you don’t feel it it doesn’t really matter. And on the contrary, It’s okay if you’re criticized, if you’re confident and believe in yourself you’ll take the constructive criticism and become a better person.

In conclusion, I completely agree with Cameron Russell and I think we shouldn’t worry as much as we do for our looks but for our personalities and ourselves.

BIOGRAPHIES: Inspirational people (4th ESO)

Yes, we are confined at home #WeStayAtHome but we continue working!

Our 4th ESO students have worked with a text about Rosa Parks.

Then, they were asked to look for information about people who had influenced them or who has been and is a reference for them.

They had to draw a MindMap with the information #VisualThinking and a writing about him/her. They could choose to do an Infographic instead.

Here we leave you some of their good work!

ERASMUS+ Trip to Belgium. Jan R. (4th ESO)

MY TRIP TO BELGIUM

Last week I was working in an Erasmus project. This project consists of creating a short movie, but also to make new friends from other countries. In Belgium, we were 3 different nationalities, the Belgium students were the hosts and every one of them accommodates a different student from Norway or Spain. The project is divided into 3 parts, in Belgium, the point was to create the script, then in Spain, we will have to shoot the film, and then in Norway, we will edit it.

On Sunday 8 of March, we met at the Barcelona airport at 4:30 am. We took the plane and when we arrived at Brussels airport we met the Norwegian partners, then we both took a train. After an hour we arrived at Namur, the little city where we would stay during the project. There we met our Belgium partners and then everyone went to their houses.

On Monday it was our first day of school, I woke up at 6:30 am. When we arrived at the school the teachers explained to us how we would distribute the work during the week. We played some games and in the afternoon we started working on the project.

On Tuesday we arrived at the school and we continued working on the project because in the afternoon we would have to present our work. After presenting our works the teachers chose 5 of the 10 projects presented, and those 5 would be the ones we were going to work on. When we finished school we all went bowling and we spent a very good time.

On Wednesday we worked during the morning and in the afternoon we took a train and we went to Brussels. When we arrived there a guide was waiting for us, then we visit many things as for example the European parliament, where we saw a Catalan politician, we also visited the Grand Place, the monument of the baby peeing and some of the most important places in Brussels.

On Thursday we started working in the morning, while teachers informed us that the Norwegian partners had to return to his country because they would close all the entries because of the “coronavirus”. It was a terrible news but we should continue working on the project because in the afternoon we would have to present our final script.

On Friday I woke up as every day at 6:30 and after I had breakfast, I looked at my phone and I saw a message from our teachers that told us that we had to return to Barcelona because if not we would have problems to access because of the “coronavirus”. We all were very sad but that decision was the best for us and for our families and we had to accept it. At 3 pm we took the plane at Brussels airport and that was the end of our magnific trip.

We all had a very good experience and we are waiting to meet each other next October in Barcelona.

BECAUSE WOMEN RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS

I’ve never seen any abuse to a girl but I have heard stupid and disgusting comments from a man to a woman and obviously I have said something to that person. In general I think that men are not really informed about feminism and all that stuff, so most of the comments they make, they think it’s a joke and they don’t know how we can feel. I wish they can experience women feelings in some situations.

I also have never suffered any abuse from a man but they have made a comment that has made me feel bad. When it happens you tell the person that is not good to say this because we feel like shit, but somehow they think it’s funny and they don’t give it importance.

As this is a big problem that is affecting increasingly to women we have to fight for our rights, our dignity and gender equality. We have to stand up to men and don’t let them be more important than us. We have to fight for equality but not only on women’s day. It’s so cool that all the people who are in favor of gender equality go out to the streets and organize demonstrations, marches and sits-in, but I think we have to fight for our rights every single day and not only this one.

We have to stop this, and we can only do it all together.

“I'm tough, I'm ambitious, and I know exactly what I want. If that makes me a bitch, okay.”
Madonna

“Feminism is the radical notion that women are human beings.”
Cheris Kramarae

“It's not my responsibility to be beautiful. I'm not alive for that purpose. My existence is not about how desirable you find me.”
Warsan Shire

“A feminist is anyone who recognizes the equality and full humanity of women and men.”
Gloria Steinem

WRITING ABOUT THE FUTURE

In a thousand years, everything regarding our lives and our world will have drastically changed. From the Earth’s environment, weather, fauna, flora… to our means of transport, communication, cities and education; it will all change.

Due to the impact of global warming and climate change, the weather will have probably been altered. The temperature might raise a few degrees which may make scientists develop some new ways of countering heat. Nature as we conceive it might not continue being the same because of human behaviour, and many biomes and ecosystems will definitely disappear.

In terms of urbanization, we should expect the construction of exceptional buildings and skyscrapers, as well as the creation of huge cities with limitless facilities and amazing means of transport. In that time, flying cars might be a reality and other supersonic, optimal and new ways of transport will allow you to travel anywhere in the world.

Another big impact will be on society and education. Students will be able to access to an unimaginable amount of information from anywhere at any time. They will also work and study from last generation devices which should make their education easier, accessible and simple.

In conclusion, our future will be mostly conditioned by climate change and the development of new technologies, which will help us in our daily routine optimizing our time.

Education by 3012 Anna V. (2nd batx B)

WHAT EDUCATION WILL BE LIKE IN 3012
In case the world has not ended by 3012, which is kind of probable considering fast pace pollution is evolving and damaging our world as we know it, I’m sure education will have changed a lot. Not only because the situation people may be facing but also the evolution of technology will be a huge help to that change.
Just by looking at how much school have evolved in the last 50 years we cannot completely predict what it will be like but I’m going to try to make some assumptions.
By 3012 I really hope people are able to fly using technology or even that teleporting is a reality.
In the education ambit, I suppose classes may not be presential, as 3D and holograms must have invented already. This will also be empowered by the fact the human race is getting lazier with time so they may have a lot of facilities to avoid moving too much. It’s very unlikely that schools still exist since all work can be done from home. With this the biggest change will be for or students in my opinion, because since the needn’t go to school everyday routines must be very different from the ones we normally do nowadays. Teachers might be able to work from home too with this method.
Still, other options are possible too. Maybe scientist invent a way to learn everything in a very short time which should be possible considering 3012 is a lot of years from today. It could be like a pill of knowledge babies take when they are born and it lets you speak every language every and acquire years and years of studying in just a moment. Or if we go beyond that humans will be fused with robots and we will be born knowing everything already, who knows?
The world will have changed a lot and humanity as well. Life as we know will have been evolving and a lot of things we can’t even imagine will be a reality.

[Diary entry]

13th June 3012 – TIME CAPSULE

Dear diary, today’s entry will be a little bit different. A few days ago, I heard about “time capsules”, and I think it’s a really interesting idea. You know I’ve always wanted to time travel, but we aren’t allowed to do it. I want to leave something for the people in the future, at least. Therefore, I’ve decided to write a little summary about how is an average life nowadays. Since it seems that people used to bury those time capsules, I’ll not only write it on my digital diary, but also print this and find a place to hide it. Here we go:

Hello, stranger! I’m Cristina, from year 3012. I don’t know when are you reading this, but if it is before year 3032, please leave this where you found it.

I’m here to introduce you year 3012. I don’t know what can be different from your time, so I’ll talk about a little bit of everything. As I mentioned before, we are not allowed to time travel, because we could modify timelines and this kind of stuff, you know, like the famous 2995 disaster. What we are now allowed to use is teleportation. It’s been a while since it was invented, but then it was forbidden, and then only authorized ones could use it, and finally two years ago the new law declared everyone could use it, but it’s still expensive. We must follow a lot of useless instructions to use it, but at least we can. These instructions may be removed in couple of months, so you might not have to wear those ugly jumpsuits.

Moving on to more trivial things: the city. We have huge buildings, the streets have a lot of vegetation (which is pretty normal, but apparently there have already been three environmental crisis which almost ends humanity), one park in the centre of every city, floating trains that connect the higher floors, etc. This mustn’t have changed. For now, our public transport works this way: when you enter it and when you get out of it, you must scan your wrist, this way it’s counted how many times you’ve used it per month and compare it with how many times you’ve used your own car, based on this comparison, you’ll have to pay lower or higher transport taxes. The higher use of public transport, the lower your taxes are. I think this shouldn’t change since it’s pretty effective.

About education, we have 4 hours of class a day, from 7:45 to 12:00. At 15:00h the virtual classes start. Each student chooses them based on what they want to study or work on later, and they can pick from one to a maximum of 4 subjects. Those subjects are flexible, you can make your own schedule with them, and the teacher in this case is a hologram with AI, which will try to answer all your questions and make personalized lessons. Those subjects don’t have a closed syllabus, its main purpose is to let the student expand its knowledge in the subject as much as he wants and promote curiosity. At the end of the term you must have done a minimum of hours, which shouldn’t be a problem since you’re doing the subjects you like. As you may have similar interests as other students, sometimes you’re asked whether you want to join a group or not, if you do, you can have holo-calls, this way you can share ideas and questions and the AI can programme group projects based on research. In university things work more or less the same way.

For now, this is all that comes to my mind, maybe later I’ll remember of something else that may be important, but now I have to take the spaceship to Mars to visit some relatives. See you!

PS: If in the future time travelling is allowed, please send me a reply.

Cristina Camacho
