Two big series

  

I consider myself a lover of the cinema, but I don’t see much TV series. This is because if you want to see them, you have to be constant and this doesn’t goes with me. At any rate, I’m able to recommend two great series.

The first one is called Heroes. It talks about people in the world who discover that they have superpowers. Every person has a different power, and there’s an evil villain that kills other people to get them gifts, so every time he kills a person, he gets stronger. There are four seasons of the series and I have seen the first two that are marvelous. I liked it so much that doing this composition, I’m impatient to see the two seasons I have left!

The second TV series that I will recommend is Friends. That one is very famous and I don’t have seen many chapters, but the ones that I saw were very funny and hilarious. The argument is about six friends (Chandler, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Ross and Rachel) and the events that happen to them. It’s a comedy about love, friendship, triumphs and falls. I believe that is nice that one series can express that making the spectator laugh at the same time. I really love that.

There are lots of series but I have talked about two that are very different but that are also huge. I hope that people who have read that composition go to “Youtube” to see at least one scene of these wonderful series. Thereby, the composition would have worth it.

Series recommendation

American TV series are the best. I’m in love with lots of the series there are in the US series map we saw in class, but as I’ve to recommend only two, I’ll try to be original and select the best ones, also I’ll talk about two series which aren’t finished yet, so nobody knows what happens at the end! I’ve seen Gossip Girl, The OC, 24h, Modern Family, How I met your mother, The Big Bang Theory, CSI, The closer, Private Practice, Two and a half men, Jericho, Dexter, Criminal Minds, House, Glee, Pretty Little Liars, Gilmore Girls and Fringe. I have to say that, of these, the only one I’ve seen complete is The OC. But I’m not going to talk about any of those. I’ll tell you the greatness of Grey’s Anatomy and Mad Men, two drama series.

Grey’s Anatomy has been my favorite TV series for more than 6 years. Its first episode was emitted in 2005 and it has nine seasons, and it hasn’t finished yet! This series is about the life of Meredith Grey, a girl who starts her medical residence in Seattle Grace Hospital, for finally becoming a graduate doctor. But it’s not only about Meredith. In the Seattle Grace we are told the stories of her colleagues, her superiors and bosses. Each episode is about medical cases, people who have illnesses, people who have been injured… but it is not just as House. In Grey’s Anatomy the most important of the series is the life of the characters and the relationships between them. Meredith knows the love of her life. They have to get over accidents, love affairs, death, work problems, some are sacked. And I like all of this because it has a lot of humor. Even in season I think it was eight or nine there was an episode which was a musical and all the characters sung through the story. Another point I like about this series is that the name of every episode is the name of a song, and at the end of the season they do a CD with all these songs, which normally are by not known groups that have an opportunity. The Fray and Snow Patrol are two of the music groups that have become popular thanks to Grey’s Anatomy. So I’d strongly recommend it.

On the other hand we have a completely different show. I started watching Mad Men last summer as it’s been very famous and has had a lot of prices. It’s set in the sixties and it tells the story of Don Draper, a publicist in New York who is a very charismatic person. On one side we see him at work, where he’s a very good and important publicist, and has a perfect lovely wife and two children. On another side we see he’s got lovers and we slowly discover he’s got a mysterious past. He’s not really who he’s pretending to be. I haven’t seen many episodes but it seems a very interesting story. Don Draper is a man who results to have lots of faces, the people who know him think that they really know him, but nobody really does. Mad Men has been given prices because it’s accurate sixties ambient, decoration and clothes. It has also a good plot. So, this would be my second recommendation.

An interesting series

I have been looking at all the series that are done in The United States and have decided to recommend to you the following one: Glee. I believe that the plot of the series is very adapted to the times that we live: the institute turns into the house of many students, since there we spend the majority of the time, and not all the moments are good; for this reason always we need something that helps us in the bad situations. Often we shelter in the friends, others, on the other hand, we do not dare to trust in anybody and need some activity that encourages us when we feel badly. In this case music turns into the best therapy and the formation of a choir helps the students to see the life differently.

In addition in this series there appears the feelings and the sensations that teenagers experience and that in many occasions the adults do not understand. The disputes, the opposing feelings, the happiness, the frustration ... they are in daily life of all the teenagers of the world and only the fondness and the comprehension are capable of stabilizing them. I believe that Glee is a series with which all the young people can feel identified in many of the situations that appear and it is possible that we find some answers that we need.

I also believe that it is important to highlight the advices that are given to be happy with ourselves and to be accepted for us without importing what the others say. The friends are those that always are going to be sincere with you to help you at all time, always with constructive criticism, It is what it will make us grow and improve. Destructive criticism only teach us that there are people who try to hurt others because they don’t feel good about themselves; just ignore him and ask God to help them be happy. Happiness is within oneself, but one must know how to find. I hope you decide to watch the series and you like it as much as me.

TV SERIES FROM THE USA

First of all and to begin with, watching TV series, especially those ones originally in English, is one of the best ways to spend your free time while you’re learning a foreign language. But it’s even better whether you watch it with friends or family.

My English teacher asked me to write about a map which showed us most of TV series that are broadcast in the USA. We know practically most of them, just because Spain is not as good as USA by doing decent series. I mean, those ones of the US have such an amazing plot that entertain you and make your knowledge increase, such as CSI, Hawaii Five-0, Bones, and why not, House.

CSI is one of the best series I’ve ever seen. I’m studying Science at school, so I’m really interested in those things related with DNA, fingerprints and so on. I love, as well, that kind of series that are set in the medieval era. It is not about love what I like, is the fact of the huge castles, knights and its battles. Equally important it’s, for me, watching funny series to enjoy and having fun to equilibrate those boring days of routine. Those like, Two and a Half Men, Friends, How I Met your Mother and so on.

In this case I have to suggest about a couple of series. As you can see, I watch “the typical” ones, so probably you would have seen them. In fact, I think that are really enjoyable and I have a great time watching them, so I would recommend you to watch House, in which the main character has an untypical behaviour, and CSI for its fantastic deductions offered by Science. Hope you enjoy watching them as I do!

EXCHANGE PROGRAM

12 students from Jesús, Maria i Josep went to Maryland from the 20^th October to the 2^nd November. So the second part of the great experience started on the 1^st April, when the American students arrived to Barcelona.

All of us were so excited to meet again our friends, and our parents and brothers to finally meet the new member of the family for two weeks. We were waiting for them with a big poster that we made, where it said “WELCOME TO BARCELONA”. 

The big hugs and kisses arrived. We were so happy to see them again!!! Finally I introduced Cassidy to my family, she is my American Student.

We took them and their big (huge) luggage to their new houses. The first day they were so tired because of the flights, so they unpacked and did a few activities with their families. For example, we did a little tour around Barcelona to show her the city.

The first day was so especial because we showed them our school and we introduced them all our classmates and teachers. They loved it! They did a little tour around our school and after it, all the exchange students had breakfast together in the school cafeteria.

The rest of the week they went to many places as Barri Gòtic, MNAC, Sitges… Two teachers and two students from our school went with them to the trips. After school, we took them to our extra activities (in my case, basketball practices) or we did some more activities with them (we went shopping, we went to Arc de Triomf…)

T.G.I.F!!! The weekend arrived and we all had a lot of plans to do with our American Students. For example, Cassidy and I went to a party, to the Camp Nou to cheer F.C.Barcelona and on Sunday we went to a restaurant to eat tapas.

The last week they went to Sagrada Familia, and to Port Aventura! That day was amazing, because in Port Aventura there were nobody, so we were able to go to all the roller coasters all the times than we wanted.

Some of the days they took classes with us: Speaking English classes, Biology, Chemistry, Maths…

The last day arrived, but after it, we had a big dinner in the school the last night. There were all the families and students and it was so nice and emotive. And on Friday morning we said them a sad goodbye in the airport.

We all know that it was not a real goodbye, it was a SEE YOU SOON. What an incredible experience!

USA EXCHANGE 

Last Monday 1st April, nine girls came from Maryland (Washington DC) to Barcelona. They did an exchange with nine girls from our school, who went to America on November.

They went some days to our school Jesús, Maria i Josep and they did some classes with Spanish students from different subjects.

These girls spent about twelve days here in Spain, and they were hosts on their respective partner houses. During this little while, they visited lots of important things of our city, like Sagrada Família or Parc Güell. They also did a modernist route trough Barcelona’s streets and they went to the children’s’ class in our school too, which was so kind, I guess.

 Last Wednesday they were here, all the grade went to Port Aventura with them and all of us had so fun, because we had the chance to spend a whole day with people who probably don’t think exactly the same way than us and this is always interesting, because you realize that some things are very different there and here.

Those girls were so nice with us, because we talked everyone with everyone and we get on well to each other; but the ones who I connected more were Kirby, Oumou and above all Maggie. I think they are so nice and friendly.

That is a great experience for all of us, even the ones who don’t went to USA and had a partner in their house, because we had the chance to know some people from other country and speak with them!

USA EXCHANGE 2013

We were nervous, intrigued and keen to meet them. I remember very well, that the night before I could not sleep on my nerves. We knew nothing about of them, only their names. We all wanted to be liked and to have a good image of us.

Upon arriving at school, we did a brief explanation of each of them and we went to class. We were all a little angered, because we wanted to be more with them.

The week was improved and we got to know each other, since in several classes we did activities with them.

When we went to Port Aventura, we first met more. We all went in small groups, but at the time we were together, that they were most comfortable.

I am of the girls who had no American girl. At first I was sad because all my friends had a girl at home, but during those two weeksall was better.They were always telling me to go with them. They behaved very well with me.

All American girls were very nice to me, but two of them, I can say that they are friends. I am a girl with a very low level of English, but they showed me that it was not the most important. If you had desire to know them, you could. I tried hard to understand and to make myself understood, and with my low level of English and sign language, I got it.

Thanks to all these girls for this experience.

 USA Exchange 2013

On Monday 1st of this month, the students of the Our Lady of Good Counsel High School of USA, that were making an Exchange with our school, JMJ, arrived at Barcelona at “El Prat” airport. The next day, the students of “1r de Btx” of the JMJ, met them at the first hour of school. People like me that didn’t know them before, were attentive and excited about the visit. I didn’t spend much time with the girls but I had fun with them during the moments that we shared.

First, in English class we made a speaking to the girls with groups and we wrote in a notebook a little composition about their hobbies, passions and life at USA. I took the opportunity to ask if the parties there are like in the films and the answer was negative, but anyway they are awesome.

The following week, we did the same but in math class. The American girl of my group was the same of the speaking, Cassidy. She was very nice with us. As we didn’t know how to do with her, we gave her the calculator to help us doing the exercise, but she didn’t need that because she’s clever.

The last day that we had fun with them, was the day of Port Aventura. It was pretty good. I remember that one of the girls bought the picture of her on the Dragon Khan and she was crying on the photo! I have a good memory of that day. It was perfect because the lines on the rollercoasters were short and we could ride many attractions.

I have to say that the school was better with the American girls and JMJ misses them. It would be great that next year there’s an exchange on “2n de Btx”. We are expecting for a new American visit!

One of the best experiences ever

A few months ago, twelve students from the JMJ school had been accepted in the first exchange program with an American high school, Our Lady of Good Counsel. There, we had a good time and we visited many places but, when we come back to Catalonia, the experience had not finished because five months later the American girls had to come to Barcelona.

The second part of this story began two weeks ago, when the American girls arrived at the airport of Barcelona and met their exchange student. All of us were waiting for them with a big sign to say welcome. We were very excited and happy to be reunited again but, on the other hand, we were a little bit sad because two American girls couldn’t come to Spain.

When everybody had met their host family, we left the airport to go to our houses. Some people went to eat out in a restaurant but others went to their houses to eat with the family because that day was the “Easter day”, a special occasion to  eat “La Mona”, a typical cake from Catalonia.

The next day, all the American girls were introduced to the 1rst BTX students and they visited the school and our neighborhood, Sant Andreu.

In the whole week, the American girls visited many places like “El barri gòtic”, Picasso’s museum, the cathedral of Barcelona, “Les Rambles”, the National Art Museum of Catalonia, etc. In these excursions, two Catalan students could go with the others and visit the different places.

On Thursday, we went to Sitges, where we could go the entire exchange program group and see the blue sea. We spent all the day there and we could do some shopping. It was a good opportunity to see a typical Catalan town and the Mediterranean coast.

 In the weekend, every couple did something different. For example, on Saturday, some of them went to the “Camp Nou” and they watched a football match. Other girls went to some Costa Brava towns like Tossa de Mar or Platja d’Aro and they spent the day by the sea.

 In the next week, the American students had time to visit more places of Barcelona, like “La Diagonal”, “El Maremagnum”, “El Parc Güell” and, of course, the most fantastic building in Barcelona, the “Sagrada Família”.

Moreover, on Wednesday, all 1rst of BTX went to “Port Aventura”, the most famous thematic park in Spain. We had a fantastic day and we went to all roller coasters, included the “Shambala”, the most famous European roller coaster. It was a nice day because American and Catalan people were together and everybody could meet each other better.

On Thursday, the exchange program did a special dinner with all the families together to say goodbye to the American girls so, that evening we dressed up and met everybody at school.  We ate lots of food, we danced and we enjoyed our last minutes with our partner. We also watched a memorable video about our lived moments in the USA.

The next day, we went to the airport and we had to say goodbye to our American sister. It was a sad day because nobody wanted to leave but we couldn’t do anything and, finally, they left the country.

It is common to think that friendship in distance is one of the most difficult things to keep, above all, if we are talking about millions of kilometers, about two completely different cultures, but, this experience has demonstrated that it is possible. This experience has been one of the best things ever I am sure I will keep in touch with my American sister forever.

I never liked the protests, I hate it. But there is one thing than... I hate it. This is the 0.1 penny than the newsagent takes to you when you buy one magazine. I buy the ‘’Hobby Consolas’’, and this slope 2,99 euros.

I hate when the newsagent says to you: change is one penny. Why say that? I do not like to go with a penny in the purse! Maybe someday this starving me for a penny, but not now! 

And I’m not of those who say: Keep it your. And  I'm just saying: thanks, good afternoon  newsagent. I want 0.5 cents to buy a bauble, but seriously ... How do you buy with a penny? It is ridiculous! 

 I can say that and it's to save, we are in crisis, and things like this ... But a cent is ridiculous! I and I would go to the government and tell them to put 1 cent more (which would go bad not, by the way ...). 

Please do not leave me in this protest. I say if someone else reads it and we can make a petition, we have a few! I hope a few, and also hope my children do not have to go through this madness, the madness of the penny. And you think young reader you get a completely useless penny more?

I protest! 

I am outraged because the supermarket next to my house does not sell something that I like.

I'm going to tell the story. They sent to the supermarket white chocolate donuts with strawberry jam inside, which are sold in boxes of 4. It was very cheap so I decided to buy a box to test.

Oh my god! They were delicious! They were the best donuts that I’ve tested.

But ... (here comes the problem!) as I was so keen on another day to buy more donuts of these and they didn’t have any! L

About this for over two months now, and have not yet put back new. It may also be that whenever I go it is finished, but I go to this supermarket more or less every two days so is unlikely.

When I'm not buying I tell my father or my mother seen them, then I would give them the money. Even so I have never again this delicious food of the gods!

I really miss them!!!!!

I PROTEST!

I protest because if you’re going to see a film in Sant Andreu, the cinema is in “La Maquinista”!

Two years ago, if you met with your friends in the cinema of Sant Andreu, it ALWAYS was on Lauren Cinemas, but a lot of people who went to the cinema of “La Maquinista” went in these shopping centre because they decided to go shopping, lunch or dinner there and if they had more time in these shopping center, they sometimes went to the cinema!

But now a lot of people go to “La Maquinista” cinemas because Lauren Cinemas have closed!

And I’m sure, that the people who work in “La Maquinista” think that they work in the best shopping center of Barcelona because they have good clothes shops, some electronically shops, restaurants and a cinema. But “La Maquinista” is only famous for the cinema!!!! (And Apple store)

For me, if I go to see films alone I prefer to go to “Les Glories”. I think that “Les Glories” has a better cinema than “La Maquinista”. And “Les Glories” had reformed the cinemas.

AN INSPIRATIONAL FRIEND

Sandra Vicente Massanet was born in Barcelona on September 24^th , 1995. She spent her childhood in Sant Andreu with her parents, going to the park and meeting other children. Sandra was brought by Tina and Joan, her parents.

At the age of five she started to go to infant school in Las Dominicas, a school of Sant Andreu. As a child she spent all of the time, going to class, staying with her friends of the school, playing sports like judo and having grate times with her parents.

Sandra studied in Las Dominicas from five years to fifteen, getting good marks and being a good student. But in the end of the ESO, in 2011, she had to decide what she wanted to do with her future, and she decided to do Batxillerat. In Las Dominicas she couldn’t do Batxillerat so she and her parents decided to go to JMJ School, which was a new school for her and she had to do new friends.

The following year she started a “new life” studying in JMJ and meeting new friends. It was so hard for her start in a place where she didn’t know anyone but, as time went by she knew lots of friends and some are now very important to her.

Right now Sandra is doing the last year of Batxillerat, the most important year for her because is the last year with her friends and is the last step to enter in the university that she really wants, and she is working really hard.

What I most admire about her, and this is why I do this essay about her, is because she has the biggest heart I’ve seen in my life! Sandra is this type of person that is never going to hurt you, and she will always be at your side to help you with whatever. She will always love you and she always has the perfect word to say you to feel better.

One of her greatest achievements is that she is getting really good qualifications in Batxillerat, and I have to say that get good qualifications is really difficult, Sandra is always working really hard and she always willing to help you. She is working so much and I hope she will get all she wants.

To finish I would like to conclude by saying that it is thanks to her that bad days were not so bad, and the good days, with her, were awesome. I would like to say her thanks for all that she has done for me.

AN INSPIRATIONAL FRIEND. Judith D. (2n batx B)

An inspirational friend

Although i discuss all the time with her, although we never agree, although sometimes I would prefer that she doesn’t tell me anything, although she is argumentative, domineering and overprotective… the truth is that she inspires me. At all.

Neus Vall Martínez, my mummy, was born in Barcelona on 30 may 1968, and had a normal childhood. She has got a little brother, and she grew up in a house with Pilar and Josep, my grandparents. She repeated her eight course, and finally she studied the degree of industrial draftsman.

She isn’t probably the best in the world at all, and even for me, she isn’t perfect. Because as everyone, she has her mistakes. But I love her and it is for all her pros and cons, for which she inspires me and for which I admire her. 

When she was sixteen she met my dad. They have been together since then and though they argue, the love each other as the beginning or more.

When she was twenty-seven years old, she had her first child, that is me. Nine years later, she had her second child, my brother Alex.

Because we are her best pro because she makes that we are as we are. Because she is the only person in the world that is always there, unconditionally. If we reject her, she forgives us. If we err, she corrects us. If we are unbearable, she endures us. If we are happy, she is excited. If we are sad, she is devastated… because she is the best clown I’ve ever met, because she is the best cook, the best witch, the best storyteller, the best scientist, the best teacher, the best friend, the best photographer, the best nurse… because she is the only person who can change my mind without saying anything, finally I should say that she is the best “perfectly imperfect” mum in the world.

AN INSPIRATIONAL FRIEND Gabriel P. (2n batx A)

Ricard was born on 20^th April 1996 in Barcelona. He spent his childhood between Sant Andreu and Andorra, because his family have a house there and they went to it every weekend.

In 2001, he entered the school “Jesús, Maria i Josep” and he was there the following eleven years. In 2008, he started playing the guitar on BCN fusion school. And, at the age of fourteen, he started doing taekwondo and now he is going to reach the brown level.

As a child, he was absolutely “crazy” because he enjoyed doing as many things as you can imagine playing the devil’s advocate with the teacher and winding everybody up. More or less, it is the normal behaviour of a child between these ages.

I met him three years ago from now, therefore in 2010. He was one of the newest people that entered our reflection group in Sant Pacià, and we connected quickly. During the next years, we have been more and more friends and I actually spent more time in his house that in mine.

Finally, I would like to end apologizing for the mistake that I have made on the title. The title is “An inspirational friend” and it would have to be “An inspirational brother”.

And we congratulate him for his birthday, tomorrow!! Happy Birthday!!

An inspirational person

A person who I admire is Margaux. She was born in Burriana, Valencia, in June 1985, where she spent her childhood. I met her playing squash. She was the Spanish team selector for women and she organized a young concentration to select the best girls for playing in European Championships. That’s when I met her. We stayed there for a week.

Why do I admire Margaux? I like Margaux because she’s an all-in-all woman. I mean, I would like to be similar to her when I grow up. She plays squash very well, as a teenager she won some European Championships and she still wins lots of championships. But she also had time for studying two degrees in Madrid and getting married. She announced her wedding with me and the other girls who were in the squash concentration. Soon afterwards, they had a lovely baby girl called Alegría and I discovered she has a blog. And she continues playing squash. I want to be able to do such a lot of things at the same time and do all of them as good as she does!

She studied journalism and protocol, now she lives in London. That’s the reason her blog is called Between Padington and Lancaster Gate.

I also like her because she has time for being fashion, for going out with her friends, etc. I mean, for me, she’s a woman that has been able to introduce into a men world such as squash and find her place being herself, just as fashion, cute and girly as she is. Some women do it acting like men, or others don’t even try it. I think it’s important for making women respected in the world. Sure there are lots of women in the world that do even more things than Margaux, but she’s only a near example. So, I admire women like Margaux. Like Elizabeth Bennet. Like Harriet Taylor. Juana de Arco, Marie Curie, Teresa de Calcuta, Evita Perón…

A SPECIAL FRIEND

My friend Maria Huguet was born in Barcelona one 22 of January. She spent her childhood in Barcelona too and she was brought up by her parents. When she was three years old, she went in Jesús, Maria i Josep school. It was when I met her. 

At first sight it seemed to be very naughty and lively. And it was, but also she was absolutely clumsy. During her teens, her clumsiness increased so much that nowadays she could win a Guinness World Record. However, she has qualities too. She is very funny when she is posing for photos and the way she does the things and her way of talking are unique. So, it’s impossible not to laugh when you are with her. 

In addition, she has a very special peculiarity: very strange experiences happened to her. For example, one time she confused the place where she had to do the First Certificate. Another time she arrived one hour earlier to the place where we met. Also when she eats something, she always gets dirty. As you can see, she is very special so, for this reason, she is only daughter, her parents don’t dare to have another one.

Probably you are thinking what I can learn from her. Well, she is like a child so she teaches me how to care of one of them. She always needs money and paper to clean all the stains. It looks like a problem, but not for me. She has changed my life completely. I miss her in class. In fact, last year she wasn’t in my class but I was obstinate that she was.

Finally, I would like to say that I wish that if someone wrote about her and did her biography, I would like to appear in it because I had been her second mum and an exceptionally friend.
