Nelson Mandela,
The idol
The recently deceased, Nelson Mandela, also known as
Madiba, has moved crowds in his funeral. Certainly, over the years, has become
a symbol in South-Africa. This is due to his battle to reach the democracy in
his country and combating the apartheid,
the segregation between white skinned people and black skinned people.
The fight with
apartheid cost him a life imprisonment and after 27 years of prision, he
had become a national symbol. He was released by the president De Klerk with
whom he collaborated to reach the democracy in South-Africa. Madiba and De
Klerk shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. Next year, Nelson Mandela became
the first president elected by the South African citizens. After a few years,
he abandoned the government and later the public life, having collaborated in
the coexistence of the races that I would call “joinheid” or “linkheid”. I have
to emphasize the support that he gave to the South African rugby team (the
Springboks), compound by white skinned people and an historic symbol of the apartheid, which won the tournament and gave
way to the reconciliation of races. This appears in the film Invictus (2009) directed by Clint
Eastwood.
