PAPERMAN
Last February 24th, as every year since
1929, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences prized the best films,
the best actors, the best OST and so on. Apart from the big films that have
been awarded, as Les Miserables or Django: unchained, there is a short film
which has stricken the cinema world: Paperman.
This short film was created by John Kahrs, a pretty young film director, and
financed and produced by Walt Disney Pictures.
The way I see it, the feats of Paperman are many. The director achieves to keep our attention in a
non-spoken film, which is not any habitual nowadays. By a captivating story of a
first-view love, he manages to gain our attention all along the seven minutes.
The good thing of it resides in the fact that mostly everyone of us has lived a
similar experience, an indescribable connection with an unknown person, whether
it be in the metro or in the street. That’s the point: we have felt many times
like both characters.
About the technical stuff, I can only say that is
amazing. The work behind these seven minutes is enormous; it is a fourteen
months work! Something that must be highlighted is the combination of
traditional animation with new technologies, as Paperman does not reject its Walt Disney spirit, but the contrary:
it brings to our minds the Micky Mouse lines, the origin of Disney, combined
with the director and XXI century stamp.
In conclusion, the Oscar to the best animated short
film could not have been given to anyone else. It is a splendorous art creation
which deserves all the recognition it is having. I am looking forward to
watching a new John Kahrs’ film.
Love the cinema!
