Parties
in Catalonia agree on new leader
Catalonia’s pro-independence parties agreed on Saturday
to elect a new leader for Catalan people who will be the President in the
Generalitat. The new leader is Carles Puigdemont who was the mayor from a small
city in Catalonia, he will be replacing Artur Mas in the alliance called Junts pel sí.
This new candidate has arrived after months of
negotiations between Junts pel sí and
la CUP, the other strong political
party that wasn’t going to vote Artur Mas to become President of Catalonia. So,
later these months these two groups of politics have been looking for someone to
become President of Generalitat and if they didn’t find anyone Artur Mas would
be forced to convene new elections because the deadline was on Sunday but
fortunately for them, they have arrived to an agreement. The reason why CUP
rejected Artur Mas to be the new president was because of his past government’s
austerity policies and his party’s linked to corruption scandals. Now that a
new candidate has been chosen Mas has said that he is going to do a step aside
in order to let the Independence movement move forward.
This secession move and the new election of Carles
Puigdemont has been held in a moment of political uncertainty in Spain after an
inconclusive general election on 20 December and now PP and PSOE oppose this
movement and they say that electing Carles and the investment is
unconstitutional.
Even though many people are against the investment of
the new President, he will take charge on Tuesday a really important moment for
Catalan people that are pro-independence so this assembly to vote who wants him
as the new president will be broadcasted in Television and on the next week it
is though that the King of Spain will made official him as the new President
but there are some rumors saying that he isn’t going to accept him because as I
said before, many people think that it is unconstitutional.
