A REPORT ABOUT THE CATALAN PROCESS. Narcís R. (2n BATX B)

The current political situation in Catalonia
The last parliamentary elections in Catalonia took place in September 2015 and Together for Yes (Junts pel sí), which is a group of Catalan political parties in favour of the independence of Catalonia, won but it didn’t achieve the absolute majority needed to form the government by themselves.
The CUP is another political party in favour of Catalonia’s independence that isn’t a part of Together for yes. In order to form a government both parties needed to agree, but the CUP didn’t want Artur Mas, who had been the president of Catalonia for 5 years, to be the president again, so there wasn’t an agreement.
The deadline to make the new government was two weekends ago and if it wasn’t made in this time there would have been new elections in March. Surprisingly, and against what most people thought, at the last minute both parties reached an agreement after three months of negotiations between them. Carles Puigdemont was elected as the new president, after Artur Mas decided to take step back to prevent more elections and to secure the political stability of Catalonia.

Carles Puigdemont was the former Mayor of Girona and his government has been made in the last few days. Their objective is to declare the independence of Catalonia in 18 months.
