Life in 3012 Cristina C. (2nd batx B)

[Diary entry]

13th June 3012 – TIME CAPSULE

Dear diary, today’s entry will be a little bit different. A few days ago, I heard about “time capsules”, and I think it’s a really interesting idea. You know I’ve always wanted to time travel, but we aren’t allowed to do it. I want to leave something for the people in the future, at least. Therefore, I’ve decided to write a little summary about how is an average life nowadays. Since it seems that people used to bury those time capsules, I’ll not only write it on my digital diary, but also print this and find a place to hide it. Here we go:

Hello, stranger! I’m Cristina, from year 3012. I don’t know when are you reading this, but if it is before year 3032, please leave this where you found it.

I’m here to introduce you year 3012. I don’t know what can be different from your time, so I’ll talk about a little bit of everything. As I mentioned before, we are not allowed to time travel, because we could modify timelines and this kind of stuff, you know, like the famous 2995 disaster. What we are now allowed to use is teleportation. It’s been a while since it was invented, but then it was forbidden, and then only authorized ones could use it, and finally two years ago the new law declared everyone could use it, but it’s still expensive. We must follow a lot of useless instructions to use it, but at least we can. These instructions may be removed in couple of months, so you might not have to wear those ugly jumpsuits.

Moving on to more trivial things: the city. We have huge buildings, the streets have a lot of vegetation (which is pretty normal, but apparently there have already been three environmental crisis which almost ends humanity), one park in the centre of every city, floating trains that connect the higher floors, etc. This mustn’t have changed. For now, our public transport works this way: when you enter it and when you get out of it, you must scan your wrist, this way it’s counted how many times you’ve used it per month and compare it with how many times you’ve used your own car, based on this comparison, you’ll have to pay lower or higher transport taxes. The higher use of public transport, the lower your taxes are. I think this shouldn’t change since it’s pretty effective.

About education, we have 4 hours of class a day, from 7:45 to 12:00. At 15:00h the virtual classes start. Each student chooses them based on what they want to study or work on later, and they can pick from one to a maximum of 4 subjects. Those subjects are flexible, you can make your own schedule with them, and the teacher in this case is a hologram with AI, which will try to answer all your questions and make personalized lessons. Those subjects don’t have a closed syllabus, its main purpose is to let the student expand its knowledge in the subject as much as he wants and promote curiosity. At the end of the term you must have done a minimum of hours, which shouldn’t be a problem since you’re doing the subjects you like. As you may have similar interests as other students, sometimes you’re asked whether you want to join a group or not, if you do, you can have holo-calls, this way you can share ideas and questions and the AI can programme group projects based on research. In university things work more or less the same way.

For now, this is all that comes to my mind, maybe later I’ll remember of something else that may be important, but now I have to take the spaceship to Mars to visit some relatives. See you!

PS: If in the future time travelling is allowed, please send me a reply.

Cristina Camacho
