Advantages
and disadvantages of
owning a pet for elderly people
Humans have always been surrounded by animals either to
eat, hunt or help in some task, are pets the exception? I do not think so.
Many times we wondered if it is good to buy a pet for elderly
people. Although there are many kinds of animals, surely the most appropriate
for them would be cats and dogs.
Dogs are very active animals, and that makes their
owners to be active and healthy: going
for a walk three daily times, playing with them, buying food or toys... All are
benefits, and more with those who are alone or without family ( dog will always
be good company). So they will be much happier.
On the other hand, not so active animals, such as cats,
give the owner a lot of dedication and constancy because they have to take care
of them a lot and therefore they have pleasant (and more relaxed obligations).
In addition, it has also been proved that having a pet
helps the recovery from diseases, frees us from stress and increases self-esteem
and the feeling of being useful.
Disadvantages? Very few. Surely the main problem would be
allergies and dirt and also the price, but fortunately we can adopt. It is
possible that, at first, that person could seem having a pet like an effort, but soon it would positive because it gives lots of love and
understanding, not expecting anything special from the owners.
For all these reasons I think that for the entire
population, from children to the elderly, is nice to buy a pet, no matter if
it's a fish, a turtle, a cat... Because it makes us to be better people, to
have someone in our care and to feel better about
ourselves. Fortunately, many hospitals and homes for the elderly have begun to
use animal into treatments. Hopefully it will continue!
