“SOCIAL NETWORKS ARE ANTI-SOCIAL” Sandra S. (2nd BATX A)

These days, almost everyone has at least one smartphone with its own social networks, which are becoming trendier around the world. First and foremost, what is actually a social network? We can define them as chains of individuals and their personal connections; however, they pull apart people more than joining them.

It is worth considering that social media is extremely useful to communicate with others, but in consequence, we are losing our abilities to interact with the ones who surround us. Few decades ago, when people wanted to talk with someone, they sent letters, phoned one another and later on, SMS appeared. Nowadays, we prefer chatting or posting photos on our social media, rather than calling our friends or relatives. This is quite awful because we are becoming more anti-social. In other words, lots of persons are connected to their smartphones the 24 hours of the day, and they are losing the chance to be with their friends and family because they are stick to the new technologies. I personally think that we have to realize how addicted to smartphones we are, and we have to stand up and leave away those screens.

On the other hand, influencers, which are those persons who promote different brands and products on social media, are growing faster and faster. The amount of these persons is unbelievable, and today’s teenagers follow them in every single social network, such as Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc. At first, it doesn’t seem a huge problem, but influencers have thousands of followers and they show an unreal image to them. In fact, a lot of kids and teenagers believe that if you don’t have lots of likes on Instagram or anyone follows you, you are not “cool”. Moreover, the existence of influencers has serious consequences on self-esteem and the way people act, and it’s also a reason why social media is anti-social.

In conclusion, I would say that social networks are essential for our daily lives, they help us to communicate with others, thanks to them we are able to post everything we want and it’s a good way to know more people. However, I personally think they suppose a problem for the society because we are becoming anti-social and increasingly, people tend to use their smartphones to talk with someone instead of hanging out with them. We should consider these facts and try to be more social and decrease all the time we spend chatting, browsing on the Internet, posting photos and videos, and set aside social media.
